The Town Square

The town square with carpet bedding

In The Museum’s City Quarter, visitors come first to the Town Square, the centre of the community.

A carpet bedding display occupies the middle of the Square. This type of garden was common in parks established in the mid-1800s.

‘Carpet bedding’ displays were patterned after the ornate floral wallpaper of the time.

Every year this display is replanted with new plants in a new pattern, but always with turn of the century vegetation in a period design.
